Worlds Smallest Battery Is 60,000 Times Smaller Than A Single AAA Battery

If you take a peak into any of the recent gadgets, tablets, notebooks and smartphone devices that have been dissected by the likes of iFixit and others. Most of the internal space is dedicated to their batteries and providing enough power for them to run at a reasonable level without the need for a recharge.
Well researches at the Rice University have now created a battery which is six times thinner than a bacterium or 60,000 times smaller than a single AAA battery. Opening the doors of innovation on miniature electronic devices.
Worlds Smallest Battery
The new battery developed by Rice University is a cross between a battery and a supercapacitor, and could be combined as in the diagram above.
“The idea here is to fabricate nanowire energy storage devices with ultrathin separation between the electrodes,” said Arava Leela Mohana Reddy, a research scientist at Rice and co-author of the paper. “This affects the electrochemical behavior of the device. Our devices could be a very useful tool to probe nanoscale phenomenon.”

Rule Your Own Kingdom With This 3D Printed Ring Of Power (Video)

Look! It’s shaped like a keyboard ‘command’ button. Woah. Since 3D printing has already emerged as hobbyists sugary dream come to vivid life, expect no end to custom jobs similar to what’s pictured below. It’s actually part of an entire line of rings, none of which rule each other.
Command Key ring
The commanding awsomeness of this Command Ring is in proud display at this online retailer called Shapeways. The people behind its creation, however, falls under the flag of Form Laboratories whom we believe mess with 3D printing a lot.

As mentioned, there’s a whole line of game themed and mecha-industrial rings available at Shapeways usually selling at a little over $50. The trick is the kind of plating customers want on the ring. For the Command key variant pictured north is available in stainless steel, glossy finish, and gold plate. Of course, the more ornate the material, the higher the price. The Command Ring is at its priciest in matted silver, selling for $101.

Here’s an enticing video for your visual senses:

It would be cool if the Command Ring could be modded to either glow or shoot a (harmless) laser beam. That way you can pretend to be the ruler of a post-apocalyptic barbarian sci-fi kingdom in your backyard. All you additionally need is a large sword, a laser pistol, and a loin cloth. Don’t forget a suitable throne. A plastic foldable chair will do in the meantime.

The Griffin IntelliCase is now available to buy directly from the Griffin website for $60, but at my last look the site was showing the case as “Out of Stock”.

id Will Make Rage HD Free For A Week After 100k Likes on Facebook

If you weren’t crazy about Rage before, then at the very least you’ll be scrambling over yourself to hit that Facebook “Like” button now. Or at least, that may be the thinking behind id and Bethesda’s announcement, we don’t really know. We would have thought that despite Rage’s bog-standard… well, everything apart from the visuals, there’d still be at least 100k people out there who were willing to give it the benefit of the doubt on the strength of the Carmack name alone. Not an assumption Bethesda PR seem to share.
We’re still hoping that maybe there’s an unannounced economic design component to the game that this publicity stunt ties into, kind of like the whole “Seven sins” thing EA did for Dante’s Inferno, only less pointless or offensive. Or maybe it’s more like giving out your email address for a discount card at the supermarket.

Google has been informed of the vulnerabilities that were used to gain access to the information, so we can expect to see these issues fixed with a security update in the near future.

Gmail Receives Long Awaited Preview Pain In Labs

If you are a Gmail user you might be pleased to know that Google has just added a new Preview Pane feature to its Gmail Labs. The newly added preview pane allows you to view whole messages rather than just small snippets in a similar way to layouts in Outlook’s Preview Pain and also Gmail when viewed on a tablet device.
Gmail Preview Pane
To enable the new Gmail Preview Pane simply login to your account, then go in to Labs with your settings, scroll down to the “Preview Pane” in the alphabetical list, enable and save. Once enabled you can then either view the preview pane horizontally or vertically.
By default there is a 3-second delay in marking a conversation as read after previewing it but that can be changed in the setting as well if you prefer a faster or slower delay.

WiFi Headed To London Buses?

London’s Mayor, Boris Johnson wants WiFi to be more available in London, we heard a while back that the plan was to get it city wide before the 2012 Olympics, and now it looks like the plan also included installing WiFi on London’s many buses.
The existing plan for the city wide WiFi previously included London’s tube stations and bus stops, but now a spokesperson for the Mayor’s office has revealed that the plan now includes the London buses.
WiFi Headed To London Buses?
“the ambition is to have [Wi-Fi access] on bus stops around London and ultimately perhaps on buses”
It isn’t clear as yet when they plan to introduce WiFi to the London buses and whether this will happen before the 2012 Olympics.

Hackers Steal Car Using Android Smartphone

Some of our reader will remember that the article we featured last Friday, where security researchers have developed a method to unlock car doors using SMS and smartphones.
The hack was named ‘War Texting’ and it was created by Don Bailey and Matthew Solnik from security firms iSec partners, and they had developed a hack that was able to intercept the wireless messages that travel between software based systems like OnStar and cars, they were able to crack the protocol behind the systems and then duplicate it with a laptop.
Car Doors
Don Bailey and Matthew Solnik have now demoed ‘War Texting’ at the Black hat security conference in Las Vegas, and they were able to unlock the doors of a Subaru Outback and also start the engine of the vehicle using an Android smartphone.
Of course the two researchers didn’t actually steal the car, they were just showing off the technology, and it looks like it could be used for other purposes, which could include remote control systems for security cameras and traffic lights.

Swedish Man Arrested For Building Nuclear Reactor In His House

The people of Sweden are an industrious lot, excelling at stuff that usually invovles much skill and manual dexterity. Small wonder than that every once in a while, news pops up of a Swedish DIY at home project gone awry.
Remember that Guitar Gun from some time ago? Anyway, Richard Handl is one guy whose name deserves to be cast unto legend. See, the deal with Handl is he endeavored to build a nuclear reactor in his kitchen. The real wow part is his lengthy blog has  kept the internet (or anyone who cared) aware of his activities. The plot does thicken however.
Nuclear Explosion
While the general internet-connected public was theoretically informed of his actions thru a blog, it took a rare query to an energy institution to get him in trouble. After a small experiment in his kitchen cause a ‘minor meltdown’ Handl tried to ask assistance from the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority who responded a few days later with three representatives and a lot of policemen.
In what would pass for comedy gold if it weren’t heartbrekingly true, the DIY enthusiast posted the following after his short incarceration:
Wednesday, I was arrested and sent to jail, when the police and the Swedish Radiation Safety Authory searched my apartment. They took all my radioactive stuff, but I was released after a hearing. But I am still suspekt (sic) for crime against the radiation safety law.I was ordered by the police to get out of the building with my hands up, then three men came, with geiger-counters and searched me. Then I was placed in a police-car, when Radiation Safety Authory went into my apartment with very advanced measure-tools.
So, my project is canceled!
fety Authory went into my apartment with very advanced measure-tools. Since then, Handl’s epic science project has gone viral. It seems he is undaunted with all the news coming in from all over the world lifting his spirits (he even links to these in recent blog posts). We raise our ale mugs to the champions of rugged, individualistic, cutting-edge science everywhere.

Cool Your Seat With A Water-Cooled Cushion

Falling under the hallowed category of crazy Japanese gadgets only Japanese are likely to buy, pictured below is a pump powered bladder that works as a cooling cushion. There are just days when your bum is too hot seems to be the rationale behind this device. The water cooled cushion works like an additional layer to any car seat and can presumably withstand the rigors of being sat on for an extended period. Not sure if it could replace a conked out airconditioner but if it keeps soaking wet arm pits at bay (from the severe heat) then it must be good.
Seat Cooler
This latest from gadgeteers Thanko could find a generous following outside Japan, as traffic prone urban areas often ask in scorching heat on slow days. Think places in mainland China and the U.S. West Coast for example.

If you’re wondering how it actually works, it’s real simple. The blue contraption stores the water and distributes it to the cushion. The problem is this gadget also sucks from your car’s battery as it connects via a jack stuck on the car lighter. Also, water containers tend to sweat and drip liquid—air conditioning does—so we’re not sure if this might end up soaking the upholstery on your ride.

Scientist Creates New Type Of Combustion Engine (Video)

Seen below is the experimental Wave Disc Generator, a lightweight hybrid engine component invented by Dr. Norbert Muller from the University of Michigan. Thanks to a $2.5 million grant from the federal government Dr. Muller and his associates have been able to perfect the latest incarnation of a combustion device that woks by trapping air. Don’t worry; a more detailed explanation arrives after the jump.
Wave Disc Generator
See, those artistic ‘rays’ of the sun-shaped disc trap air so they combust causing the disc to spin at incredible fast speed. When finally graduated from a prototype to a viable automotive hybrid component, Dr. Muller expects it to serve cars with a 500 mile range. Not only does it over-achieves in the performance scale, but is expectedly lightweight with guaranteed reduced emissions. Of course, this sounds like a wish list for a game-changing super-device. Let’s wait for it to come true before heaping any genuine criticism.

The idea is solid, however, and so long as the funding doesn’t dry up (a worrying specter considering present financial straits) Dr. Muller could finally drive power generation to a new plateau.

Below is a short clip of Dr. Muller explaining how the Wave Disc Generator could really make a difference when it comes to energy efficiency and innovation:

99 Year Old Japanese Grandmother Loves Her Bomberman (Video)

Loves it so much in fact, she finishes a few games every other day. Her name’s Umeji Narisawa, a 99 year old grandmother who took up Famicon (better known elsewhere as Nes) a quarter century ago and has been at it ever since. Gotta hand it to the old folks, they don’t outgrow their diversions as much as the younger set do.
Nes Grandma
Seen above is a picture of her in acton plugging away with her trusty old console. You have to love old cartridges, the magic in them gets better as time goes by.
Unlike a few of the elderly we know, Mrs. Narisawa isn’t no slouch at the controls either. She’s finished Bomberman countless times and actually credits it for keeping her brain sharp. Ah, challenges—without them where will the zest of life come from.
While it’s clear dear lady Narasawa hasn’t taken up World of Warcraft or first person shooters, we believe if fate continues to smile on her she might try out contemporary games. Keep in mind she’s 99 years old and reaching such an age is a serious feat. According to our calculations she was born in 1912 and lived through several major upheavals that have shaped Japanese history, including the Second World War.
Actually if we met her we’d love to ask if she has a favorite manga.
Here’s a video of her in vivid action:
