Hackers Unlock Car Doors Via SMS
Security researchers at iSec partners, Don Bailey and Mathew Solnik have discovered a way to unlock car doors and even start some car engines remotely using SMS.
The two researchers have managed to intercept the wireless messages that travel between software based systems like OnStar and cars, they were able to crack the protocol behind the systems and then duplicate it with a laptop in around two hours.
They have managed to use the hack on two different systems and unlock the vehicles, and they have given the system the name of ‘War Texting’, and will present it at the Black Hat Conference later this week, although they have said that they wont release any details on the system and how it works so that it can’t be used maliciously.

Dragon Age 2 Pulled From Steam Due To Legacy DLC
Just as the new DLC Legacy update is released for Dragon Age 2 by EA, the game has unceremoniously been removed from the Steam games network by Valve, for breaking Steam’s Terms of Service. Rather than being made available via Steam’s own client, EA saw fit to release the new DLC via an in-game store, which has prompted Valve to remove the game from its network.
EA explains the situation but Valve is remaining quite about the removal of the Dragon Age 2 game.
“At EA, we offer our games and content to all major download services including GameStop, Amazon, Direct2Drive and Steam,”
“Unfortunately, Steam has adopted a set of restrictive terms of service which limit how developers interact with customers to sell downloadable content. No other download service has adopted this practice. Consequently some of our games have been removed by Steam.
“We hope to work out an agreement to keep our games on Steam.”

Has Dragon Age 2 disappearance from Steam affected you in anyway?
Alleged iPad Nano Clone Is Quite Impressive Specs-wise
It’s called the Timesnap, a wrist gadget that’s so packed with features we’re surprised it isn’t a smartphone as well. Fundamentally a well endowed MP3 and MP4 player, the Timesnap packs 4GB of storage space and video playing capabilities. It’s a mean muzack player to boot and has an upgradable SD memory (goes to 8GB). On top of these lovely attractions, the Timesnap–hold your breath–is also an e-reader, though we doubt reading text from such a small screen would be enticing.
Just to summarize the other stuff on the product page, the Timesnap has a flexible wristband, earphones, USB capabilities, picture storage, radio–standard for most players these days.
Oh yeah, it’s a watch too. We’re not sure about how all these juicy options will influence the battery life though, which is rechargable of course.
Also, having the Timesnap on your wrist with earphone wire snaking up your arm looks a little awkward for our taste. If it’s so loaded with features, maybe bluetooth capabilities should’ve been thrown in as well, right? No worries, as a Timesnap 2G or some variant is in the works. Maybe.

Save Your Dusty Cassettes With The Cassette Capture Player
Now that we mentioned it you probably remember that old box where you keep those unused cassettes of the Spice Girls and Elton John. Don’t be ashamed a smany people share the same unease over their bygone music tastes. But what’s that? You miss listening to old albums? Totally fine. Here comes the perfect gadget to bring them to digital immortality.
The Cassette Capture, itself reminiscent of an old school Sony walkman, allows the user to play cassettes that are then converted to an mp3 file and saved onto a hard drive. Rea simple and it’s got no capacity limits—the genius of cassettes really, so your entire AC/DC back catalogue can be preserved.
Of course, as to why re-recording a cassette is better than simply downloading isn’t a question we’ll tackle. The Cassette Capture’s value ride son nostalgia and personal sensitivity over old music.
The lightweight Cassette Capture comes with a USB cable and a built in program for transferring the files. The real interesting par tis a earphones jack means the Cassette Capture is a Walkman in all but name.
This is good news for nostalgic die hard music fans. Us too, since we haven’t listened to our cassettes of Prince’s “Purple Rain” for ages. Last: the Cassette Capture is selling for $26 each.
New J!ns Glasses Moisturizes Your Strained Eyeballs
Eye strain sucks. If your schedule leaves you staring at a computer screen all day followed by a frenzied stretch of off hours gaming somewhere, then you know what we mean. Thing is, our interconnected dystopian reality demands that we remain in front of monitors all day. This naturally hurts our eyes, no two ways about it. Renowned glasses maker J!ns—pronounced Jin—have unveiled a couple of new eyeglasses to relieve ocular assisted visual organs.
Seen above is the J!ns moisture, a clever contraption embedded pair that helps moisten strained eyes. If you’ve ever closed your eyes at the office and felt them water, you sure as heck know that a gadget like this will prove useful. Better than awkward eye drops even. Or maybe, because some people prefer eye drops.
There’s another variant next to the Moisture called the J!ins PC, whose lenses reduce the numbing glare of a computer screen.
Both won’t be out until the end of October and will be priced fairly, as in affordable but not cheap.
In the meantime, perhaps you’d like to give those eyes a break. They need it, given how much visual pollution assails us these days from crappy 3D movies to shallow TV programs and lulz on YouTube. Ugh.

Battlefield 3 Ten Times As Pre-Ordered As Bad Company 2
This could very well be the first inkling of a major reversal in the world of military FPS games. We would have had a bit more faith if EA had thrown out some figures in relation to Modern Warfare 2 pre-orders as well, instead of measuring itself against its previous outing, but maybe they’re really into self-help books these days, who knows?
We have to admit it’s a rather impressive figure to bandy around and just the notion that the amount of Battlefield 3 pre-orders is ten times the size of … well, anything makes it more attractive by default. We just hope Modern Warfare 3 doesn’t manage the same feat, one Y2K per millennium is more than enough, thank you very much.
Crysis 2 Sells Three Million
In the good old days, that number would havebeen enough to make a blockbuster three times over, but in the time of sixty-million development budgets we’re not so sure. EA seem pleased with the title’s performance, as well they should be, that song from the ad was all kinds of catchy. It apparently did well financially too.
To be honest, we haven’t gotten around to playing it yet, but seeing how the first one was the best game engine ad since the first Gears of War and infinitely better written, we’ll definitely have to joint the “three million” club, as we’re sure they’re calling themselves at their secret meetings and get a closer look.
Samsung Sells 5 Million Galaxy S II Smartphones In Under 3 Months
The Samsung Galaxy S II has been a huge success for Samsung, their latest flagship smartphone has yet to go on sale in the US, and it is expected to become available with a number of US carriers next month.
Recently we heard that Samsung had sold over 3 million Galaxy S II smartphones, this took the company just 55 days and now they have announced that they have sold over 5 million Galaxy S II handsets in just 85 days.
These figures are pretty impressive, and we suspect the when the new Samsung Galaxy S II goes on sale in the US, this number will increase considerably.
We recently got on handset on Samsung’s latest flagship smartphone have a look at our Samsung Galaxy S II review to see what we thought of it.

Apple Working On Ultra Thin 15 Inch MacBook
Apple recently announced the 2011 MacBook Air, and now its seems that Apple may have another ultra thin MacBook in the works which will come with a 15 inch display.
The news comes from Mac Rumors, and apparently the new ultra thin 15 inch MacBook is in the late stages of testing, although it isn’t clear whether it will be called the MacBook Air or if it is designed to be a replacement for the MacBook Pro.
We have recently seen Apple remove DVD drives from the new Mac Mini, and now it would appear that Apple could have the MacBook Pro in its sights to remove the DVD drive, which would allow them to produce a much thinner MacBook Pro than the existing model.
It looks like Apple may want to get rid of the DVD as it did with the floppy disk, OS X Lion is the companies first operating system to ship without a DVD or physical disk, although it will be available via USB later next month.
Also with the launch of Apple’s new iCloud service, MacBook’s will need less storage as much of your music and video can be stored in the cloud, this would allow Apple to launch a new ultra thin MacBook Pro with a solid state drive as standard like it does with the MacBook Air.
Windows Phone 7 Mango Released To Manufacturers
It looks like Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 Mango is getting closer to release as Microsoft has announced that it has now delivered Windows Phone 7 Mango to manufacturers.
This means that manufacturers will now be able to start customizing Windows Phone 7 Mango for their handsets, and we should see Windows Phone 7 Mango smartphones being released over the next few months.
Earlier this morning, the Windows Phone development team officially signed off on the release to manufacturing (RTM) build of “Mango” – the latest version of the Windows Phone operating system.
Microsoft also mentioned that the Windows Phone 7 Mango update for existing Windows Phone 7 handsets will be available this fall, so we can probably expect it to be released some time from September onwards.

HTC Want To Negotiate Patent Dispute With Apple
Recently an ITC judge ruled in Apple’s favor in the patent case between Apple and HTC, the last thing we heard from HTC was that they were going to appeal the ITC ruling.
Now HTC has been talking to Bloomberg, and the company has said that they are prepared to enter discussions with Apple over the possible patent infringements on Apple’s iOS devices.
“We are open to all sorts of solutions, as long as the solution and the terms are fair and reasonable,” Yung said. “On and off we’ve had discussions with Apple, even before the initial determination came out.”
Whether Apple will be prepared to enter discussions with HTC remains to be seen, and it Apple and HTC do come to some sort of agreement or deal this could have wider implications for Google’s Android OS and other Android smartphone manufacturers.
